Co-Founder and Architect of Powerset to Bolster Ingk Labs Investment and Development Efforts
NEW YORK—September 5, 2011—Ingk Labs announced that Lorenzo Thione has accepted an appointment to the Ingk Labs executive team, joining the company’s founding partners in an independent role that will help guide the development of the firm’s IP rescue roadmap. With a specific focus on advising Ingk Labs portfolio ventures that employ natural language processing and machine intelligence-based search technology, Thione will draw on his tremendous experience funding, building, mentoring, and exiting profitable companies in an effort to enhance the Ingk Labs portfolio. His selection expands the number of Ingk Labs partners to three, two of whom are founding partners.
Well-known as the architect and co-founder of Powerset, a natural language search engine that was acquired by Microsoft in 2008 as an innovation platform for Bing, Thione subsequently served as the principal program manager for Microsoft’s Powerset division. Previously, he worked at Xerox PARC in natural language processing and related research fields.
“Lorenzo’s work at the forefront of natural language processing and machine intelligence has defined the industry,” said Craig Alberino, CEO and founding partner at Ingk Labs. “His experience confronting the challenges of building a world-class company will be a remarkable asset in assisting Ingk Labs portfolio ventures to realize their fullest potential and obtain an outstanding financial return for investors.”
An investor and advisor to Silicon Valley startups including Dolores Labs, Benchrank, Wizpert, Kidlandia, Etacts (now Salesforce), Gobble, Lucid Charts, Yormo, Doocho, 8Coupons, Restopolis, and iBrii, Thione is also the co-author of several publications on software engineering and computational linguistics. He holds a master’s degree in software engineering from the University of Texas at Austin.
Alberino continued, “Lorenzo’s advice and collaboration will be instrumental as Ingk Labs enters a phase of increased deal flow and acceleration of high-quality, high-growth intellectual property from concept to company.”
In addition to his business endeavors, Thione is a Broadway producer who has brought several productions to the national stage including the 2011 Tony Award-winning Catch Me If You Can, and American Idiot. He serves on the board of trustees for the American Conservatory Theatre of San Francisco, and is a founding board member of StartOut, a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering entrepreneurship within the LGBT community, as well as serving in advisory roles for numerous Bay Area charity organizations.
